No bail for suspect in St. Leonard double stabbing, family calls request ‘ridiculous’

MONTREAL – It didn’t take Justice Natalie Fafard long. The Montreal judge quickly turned down a bail request made by 30-year-old Juan-Carlos Sandoval-Candanedo on Friday afternoon at the courthouse.

The sister of one of his victims couldn’t believe he had even made the request.

“It’s retarded, it’s ridiculous,” Buffy Pompetti told Global News.

The suspect has been charged with the vicious stabbing of two people inside a St. Leonard apartment last Friday.

One of the victims, the suspect’s ex-girlfriend Tara Pompetti, remains in hospital in critical condition. The other victim, 38-year-old Alex Resilard-Mathieu, is recovering.

New details of the case were read to the court Friday but a publication ban prevents any details from being made public.

“The facts are troubling, but that’s the most I could say,” crown prosecutor Matthew Ferguson said.

Sandoval-Candanedo is facing six charges: two counts of attempted murder, a count of aggravated assault, a count of break-and-enter, and a weapons charge.

The Montreal man has a history of domestic violence-related charges.

He was convicted of assaulting another woman in 2002 and in 2011, he faced other assault charges.

The victim in that case was also Tara Pompetti.

The Pompetti family provided a brief update on her condition on Thursday.

“She’s healing. It’s progress. But we don’t know. She’s in an induced coma,” her sister said.
