Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne says environmental concerns over plans to use pipelines to transport Alberta oil east through Ontario will be addressed before any decisions are made.

Wynne says the concerns have to be at the centre of any talk about the movement of fuel through the province.

She also says her Liberal government will work with all groups, including First Nations communities, to make sure the concerns are addressed.

Anti-pipeline protests have cropped up in Ontario over Enbridge’s plan to transport oil from Western Canada to refineries in Ontario and Quebec.

On August 3, TransCanada Corp. announced it is moving ahead with the proposed Energy East pipline. The $12-billion plan would see western oil shipped to Quebec and the East Coast. It’s the largest project in the company’s history and one it compares to the Canadian Pacific Railway in its economic impact for the country and trade benefits overseas.

The Calgary-based company said there is enough interest from customers, at home and abroad, in the proposed Energy East pipeline for the project to go ahead.
