UPDATE: Arrest warrant issued for bogus Burnaby dentist

An arrest warrant has been issued for the dentist accused of operating an illegal practice out of his Burnaby home.

Tung Sheng Wu, also known as David Wu, did not appear for his hearing in court today and had no legal representation.

It is believed he may have fled the country.

Wu was practising dentistry without a licence, and was not properly cleaning or sterilizing his instruments.

He was banned from practising dentistry in 2003.

The College of Dental Surgeons of BC (CDSBC) was alerted about Wu’s practice after a tip from a former patient.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

The College then determined he was not a registered dentist and hired a private investigator to conduct surveillance at a home on Southwood Street in Burnaby.

In May, the RCMP have entered the home and found a dental office in a bedroom.

In court today, it was revealed what exactly was found inside — including X-rays of children and adults, 1,200 patient charts and extracted teeth in his garbage.

The college says they have no records of required testing to ensure instruments and materials are properly sterilized.

The Fraser Health Authority says all 1,500 of Wu’s patients need to be tested for Hepatitis B and C as well as HIV.

B.C.’s college of dental surgeons is seeking jail time for Wu after he failed to obey a court ruling banning him from practising dentistry.

Everyone who has received treatment is asked to call a public health nurse through Fraser Health’s toll-free hotline at 1-855-895-7425.
