Rumours link Sheepdogs member to Lydia’s purchase

SASKATOON – The news that one of Saskatoon’s most popular establishments closed its doors has sent shock waves around the city via social media.

The abrupt closure of Lydia’s Pub has former patrons and musicians reminiscing while a lack of knowing why has sparked speculation and drummed up rumours.

The Sheepdogs first paid gig was at Lydia’s Pub. Rumours surfaced hours after the Broadway Avenue bar closed that a member of the band is part of a Saskatoon group that is investing in Lydia’s and bought the name.

But according to The Sheepdogs publicist, she’s not sure where the rumour started and that it is not true.

“I don’t know where that came from but I’ve been hearing about it. I keep getting text messages about it but I don’t know anything about that right now,” said Ryan Gullen, The Sheepdogs bassist.

The Sheepdogs were one of many bands that are sad to hear of the closure.

“For the first good year or a bit that we started playing live we basically only played at Lydia’s and kinda met other bands, met other people in music as well as honed our sound and our craft for playing live and all that good place, right at Lydia’s initially,” said Gullen.

Lydia’s unexpected closure was announced Monday on Facebook.

The owners said there is not much to say about the reasons behind their sudden departure from Broadway and that they would like the pub to be remembered as one where good times were had and thanked everyone who supported the establishment.

For many, Lydia’s closure hurts but the memories made will last forever.
