Toronto to test red curb painting project

TORONTO – The City of Toronto wants to make it clear where motorists can or cannot park their vehicle by painting red marks on the side of street curbs.

Flanked by Councillor Denzil Minnan Wong, Mayor Rob Ford detailed the pilot project this morning during a press conference on University Avenue.

“I’ve head taxpayers loud and clear folks. They are sick and tired of being ticketed,” he said. “Drivers will now know not to park their vehicles in areas that could be dangerous to pedestrians or impact emergency vehicles.”

After eight months, city staff will analyze the result and determine whether to implement the project permanently across the city.

Ford said the pilot project will improve the flow of traffic, clarify parking regulation and enhance pedestrian safety by making it easier for driver to know where they are allowed to park.

“The city of Toronto is now painting certain curbs red, to show drivers where parking is prohibited,” he said.

Students will be hired to watch over the marked curbs and record motorist behaviour.
