LABRADOR CITY, N.L. – The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary is advising residents of Wabush to avoid outdoor physical activity because of smoke from a nearby forest fire.

Police say while there is no immediate threat from the blaze, it’s anticipated there will be increased smoke over the community because of the direction of winds in the area.

Police also say the Trans Labrador Highway remains closed between Route 500 and Demille Lake and they are asking cabin owners not to enter the area near the fire.

The province’s Natural Resources Department says the area covered by the blaze grew overnight to about 6,000 hectares, so a third water bomber and an additional ground team has been brought in to bolster efforts.

The fire, which began Sunday, is burning in an area 10 kilometres east of Wabush.
