REGINA- June 21st- The official day of National Aboriginal Day. Canadian’s marked this day because it coincides with the coming of summer.
Activities were held around Regina on Friday, recognizing and celebrating the culture and contributions of First Nations, Metis, and Inuit people.
Wascana park had several activities and Shadaya was proud to be part. “Our family, we all get together and celebrate our culture and what we do on this day.”
“I think it’s important that they actually have this opportunity,” said Shadaya’s Aunt. “When I was a kid, I did not have an opportunity like this.”
A graduating ceremony was held at The RCMP Depo Division. The 3 week pre-cadet program attracts recruits from throughout Canada. Though this doesn’t officially connect to National Aboriginal Day, it is important in its own right.
“Now that this falls upon our graduation day, it provides a sense of accomplishment and reward at the same time,” said Josh Shaughnessy, graduate of the program.
And that’s part of what National Aboriginal Day is about- accomplishments, but it’s also about past cultural relationships, and the work left to be done said Shadaya’s aunt.
“Canada does not have a good reputation with Aboriginal people, so I really do hope that our future generations both non-Aboriginal and Aboriginal come together and celebrate.”
