WEM’s whale on the move

The famous bronze whale sculpture in West Edmonton Mall will be relocating to make way for seating for shoppers.

The whale, a full-sized work entitled “Open Sea” by Canadian artist Robin Bell, was removed last week from its watery display area, where it’s been since 1983 when the mall’s Phase 2 was built. The sculpture has been popular with mall patrons, who have climbed inside for photographs.

The water feature will be filled in and soft seats installed in its place, said mall spokeswoman Sheri Clegg. “We know that there’s going to be a lot of people around there. There’s going to be men and children who are waiting for the women in their lives who want to shop.”

“We’re going to reintroduce it into the mall in a different location,” Clegg said.

The move was prompted by the Victoria’s Secret store which is planned to open it’s only store in Western Canada on August 12th.
