One of our viewers asked how seniors can learn basic computing skills, a very good question.
There are many places to learn about new technology from smartphones, to tablets/ipads and computers.
Here is where you can get your tech skills up to snuff, even if you are a beginner. One word of advice: avoid getting a quick lesson from family members as most have bad technology habits. A more former session will mush easier on you and you will start off right. And don’t get caught in smaller computer shops that will gladly offer you a computer session for $90 an hour!
STORES
-Apple stores offer free workshops (maximum of 10 people) on varying devices, from iPhones, iPads, iMacs and MacBooks. They are one hours long and you don’t have to bring your own device. And there is no pressure to even buy anything. All local Apple stores can be found online. Here is one example for Southgate: http://www.apple.com/ca/retail/southgatecentre/
-London Drugs offers free mini demos in every store on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6:30 pm and Saturdays at 2:30 pm. They are about 20 minutes long and vary in subject, but every store posts the schedule and topic, or you can phone them. They will also offer more structured sessions if you have an interested group with advance notice.
-The Edmonton Public Library downtown Computer Club offers free tech sessions every Sunday at 2 pm, even one-on-one sessions if requested. You don’t need a library membership but it would come handy when it comes to accessing the many library resources online.
SENIORS LOCATIONS
-Most senior centres offer computing workshops, some more formal than others. This can range from member volunteers to someone from the industry who happy to come in and help.
