EDMONTON – Alberta Transportation has closed part of Highway 744 near the town of Peace River because of a “severe and active landslide.”

Highway 744 from town limits to the top of Judah Hill has been closed since May 18. Local authorities, including the local school division, RCMP and emergency services staff, were contacted about the closure and alternate route. Alberta Transportation issued a Public Service Announcement to inform local residents of the detour over the weekend.

In a news release, Alberta Transportation says “due to the location and severity of the slide, the length of time the road closure will be in effect is unknown.”

The government says traffic entering and leaving the town on Highway 744 is being detoured to Highways 2 and 683.

The contractor responsible for the maintenance of the highway in the area continues to monitor the slide’s activity. Geotechnical Engineers will be inspecting the area and recommending possible treatment options.
