Decision BC: Popular vote breakdown
Star Liberal candidate and Langley Mayor Peter Fassbender has defeated the NDP incumbent to win the riding of Surrey-Fleetwood.
Fassbender narrowly defeated the NDP’s Jagrup Brar, with 45.5 per cent of the vote to Brar’s 44.3 per cent, as of 10:36 p.m. on election night. Only a little more than 200 votes separated the two candidates.
Fassbender did not resign his position as mayor of Langley while contesting for this provincial seat. He was elected mayor in 2005, and has been a councillor since 2002.
Brar is the NDP’s critic for Small Business. He was first elected in a 2004 by-election. Before entering politics, the Indian-born Brar was the executive director of a Surrey entrepreneur group. He was also once on India’s national basketball team.
He handily won his current seat in 2009, defeating Liberal candidate Jagmohan Singh by nearly 2000 votes.
Green candidate Tim Binnema won 5.8 per cent of the vote, as of 10:36 p.m. on election night.
