EDMONTON – An environmental assessment continues at the Misericordia Hospital, site of flooding late Thursday night that caused the displacement of 53 patients.
The hospital resumed accepting ambulances on Saturday, after having to redirect them on Friday, Donna Call, a communications manager for Covenant Health, said.
The hospital will not be able to resume normal operations until the assessment is completed, Call said.
Forty-six elective surgeries were cancelled on Friday after a valve attached to a high-volume pipe ruptured during a toilet repair on the third floor.
Twenty-five medicine patients on the same floor were moved to other units throughout the hospital.
Water also seeped through the floor and flooded a mental health unit on the second floor, causing 28 patients to be moved temporarily to a chapel and into the day surgery ward. Eight patients were moved to other facilities.
Water damage also occurred on the main floor, affecting the gift shop and diagnostic imaging area.
Call said it is not clear when the hospital can return to normal operations. Cost of the damage remains unknown.
