ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – The premier of Newfoundland and Labrador isn’t satisfied with changes being made to improve search and rescue in Canada.
Kathy Dunderdale says the federal changes don’t go far enough and her faith in the search-and-rescue system hasn’t been restored.
Earlier this week, the auditor general highlighted a number of deficiencies in the system.
Defence Minister Peter MacKay announced changes yesterday that include giving rescue bases more flexibility to adjust their hours of operation to better match incident times.
The government will also spend up to $16.2 million to improve satellite search systems.
But Dunderdale says there still needs to be an immediate improvement to communications, a plan to replace aging vessels and aircraft, and resources to improve training.
