Ambleside Park visitors asked to keep their distance from elephant seal on beach

All elephant seals spend one month each year on land to moult; they undergo what is called a “catastrophic moult” in which they shed all of their fur along with an underlying layer of skin. West Vancouver

Authorities in West Vancouver are asking beach goers to keep their distance from a visiting juvenile elephant seal.

The seal appeared on the beach at Ambleside Park yesterday.

People and their pets are being asked to keep a safe distance from the seal, who is currently experiencing what is called a “catastrophic moult.”

The seal will shed all its fur along with an underlying layer of skin. It may appear to be sick or injured but this is normal.

Although the seal may look slow and harmless, it is capable of moving very quickly and can be dangerous if it feels threatened.

A barricade has been set up around the seal, who is expected to be on the beach for three weeks to a month.
