Funeral held for 5-year-old killed by garbage truck

TORONTO – Hundreds of people gathered at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church on Birchmount Road Tuesday morning to mourn the five-year-old girl who was struck and killed by a garbage truck Thursday.

Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger was struck by the truck Thursday afternoon while she was crossing Cliffside Drive near East Haven Drive in Scarborough.

She was pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other children, a 6-year-old and a 13-year-old, were also injured during the incident.

Following the service, Kayleigh’s step-grandfather Jim Patton described her as a “beautiful child” who never stopped smiling.

“It’s hard. We’ve lost a child, a beautiful child. It could have been prevented. It’s an accident and our family understands that it was an accident,” Patton said. We’re going to do our best to move on as a group and as a community.”

Kayleigh is survived by her two parents and sisters.

Patton said the memorial erected near the spot where Kayleigh died will soon be taken down claiming the community needs to move on.

“I hope the community and everybody understands that we need to move on and having those children on Monday morning see that, it’s not what we need as a community,” Patterson said.

Police are continuing to investigate the incident however no charges have been laid.

The 64-year-old man who was driving the garbage truck was treated for shock following the collision.
