COMMENTARY: Three cheers for the Around the Bay Road Race

Drizzle, winds gusting up to 60 km/h, cold, cloudy.

Sunday was a stay-in-your-pyjamas, sip-some-hot-chocolate and watch-movies-all-day kind of day.

But not for about 10,000 people who took over parts of downtown Hamilton, and a few busy roads like Burlington Street, Eastport Drive and York Boulevard for a few hours yesterday morning.

The 123rd running for the Around the Bay Road Race, North America’s oldest such event, was spectacular in more ways than one.

CHML colleague Bill Kelly and I broadcasted once again from the finish line inside FirstOntario Centre.

We marvelled at the times of 30k champions Panuel Mkungo of Kenya and Dayna Pidhoresky of Vancouver… and we were in awe of the blistering pace of 5k winners Ross Proudfoot and Kate Van Buskirk.

But kidney transplant patient Tom McSevney put everything into perspective with his tale of dialysis, constant check-ups and the exceptional staff at St. Joe’s.

The Around the Bay Road Race has become a lot more than just a race around Hamilton and Burlington.

With its partnership with St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton, it has become a blessing for many.
