A section of the Hwy. 401 collector lanes are closed westbound in north Toronto due to a bus rollover that left the driver with serious injuries.

At about 9:30 a.m. near Allen Rd., the driver of the tour bus lost control of the vehicle for “unknown reasons,” according to witness statements provided to police.

The vehicle then overturned and crashed into a set of barriers.

Police said the driver, the lone occupant of the vehicle, was ejected from the bus. He was rushed to hospital with serious injuries.

“The reports say he was actually sliding on the windscreen of the motor vehicle down the highway for a portion of time,” said Ontario Provincial Police Const. Ian Michel.

Towing crews were on scene working on a plan to clear the bus, which landed on its side. Debris from the barriers also had to be cleaned up before the highway could reopen. Traffic is being redirected at Bathurst St.

Michel estimated the area would reopen by around 1 p.m.

By 7 p.m., one right lane had reopened on the westbound collector lanes. The on-ramps at Avenue Rd. and off-ramp to Bathurst had all reopened.
