The massive blaze that raged through the fish plant on Government Wharf on the night of Nov. 16 has been deemed accidental by Halifax Fire. Investigators determined the electrical fire started in an office.

Jack Liu, owner of Capital Seafoods, says his company will rebuild the burned portion, but in the meantime they plan to do what they can to accommodate lobster fishermen who are ready to set their traps on Monday.

The lobster tank, which holds live lobsters, didn’t sustain any damage in the fire, therefore Liu said the company can keep buying lobster from fishermen and continue its live lobster shipments.

A Nova Scotia Power crew was on site Friday, attempting to restore power to the live tank in time for the start of the season on Nov. 28.

Liu said pending CFIA approval, his company will resume live lobster operations when fishermen return to the wharf with their catch.

“As soon as we have power, as soon as we get a blessing of approval from CFIA to resume operation, we’re going to bring back our workers to resume operations,” Liu said.

When it comes to restoring the rest of the plant, Liu said there is still a long road ahead, from cleaning up debris to actually starting the rebuild process.

“We will rebuild what’s been burned down and possibly expand our operation in Nova Scotia,” Liu said Friday.

Liu also said the company hope to expand its brand by investing in Atlantic Canada and bring business to the rest of the country and the world.

Due to incoming weekend weather, Liu said there may be a delay in the start of the lobster fishing season.
