3 prominent Edmontonians honoured with Order of Canada

A musician, a businesswoman and a leader in the field of health and medicine are three Edmontonians who were honoured with the Order of Canada Thursday.

P.J. Perry is a talented jazz alto saxophonists who started his career at an early age. He toured Europe before coming home to Canada and joining Tommy Banks’ jazz group, which resulted in Perry becoming a prominent figure in Canada’s jazz music scene. He continues to tour and perform, as well as mentoring young musicians.

Terrence Montague has been credited with improving health in Canada. Montague developed a patient-centred model of care that has improved health outcomes for individuals with chronic diseases. The Edmonton native led several disease management projects using the model, including one of the first heart function clinics in North America.

Montague developed the centre as director of cardiology at the University of Alberta and, later, as vice-president of patient health at Merck Canada.

Cathy Roozen is the third Edmontonian receiving the Order of Canada Thursday. Roozen has been credited with being a leader in the investment and banking sector, and a mentor in the industry.

Roozen has supported health care, educational, arts and culture, and social service organizations in Alberta and Canada as head of the Allard Foundation.

Roozen is the daughter of legendary Edmonton entrepreneur Dr. Charles Allard, who founded Global Edmonton (at the time called ITV) in 1974.

The Order of Canada ceremony took place in Ottawa Thursday morning.
