WINNIPEG — For the first time in their school history a Sisler student will play division one basketball in the NCAA.

Sisler Spartans point guard Raizel Guinto has committed to Louisiana Tech starting next fall. Guinto helped the Spartans win back to back provincial championships and has played with the provincial team since she was just 11 years old.

Wednesday, on the opening day of the NCAA signing period, Guinto signed her official letter of intent to join the Lady Techsters.

“For me, it’s a great honour,” said Guinto. “Proud of myself to make it this far in my basketball career. I guess coming from Winnipeg where it’s not really a big city where everyone gets noticed for what they’re capable of.”

In September Louisiana Tech co-head coach Scott Stoehr visited Winnipeg to meet with Guinto and her family and invited them down for a visit to the school. It was during that 3-day trip in October when Guinto gave her verbal commitment.

According to Spartans head coach Michael Tan there were a number of schools both north and south of the border that showed interest in Guinto.

“I’m truly honoured and proud of the accomplishments that she’s had,” Tan said. “Just because I’ve gotten the chance to coach her for probably about six years now. And to see all that work pay off and for her to be another one of our star athletes to come out of Sisler, it just bodes well for the program.”

Currently there are only two other Manitoba women competing in NCAA division one in the United States. Former Glenlawn Lions forward Emily Potter is a member of the Utah Utes and former Oak Park Raiders forward Jordan Tully recently transferred from Boise State to play for the Stetson Hatters.
