Smoke alarms alert Castleridge residents to basement fire

The Calgary Fire Department is crediting working smoke alarms with alerting four people to a blaze that had sparked in the basement of their Castleridge home on Sunday.

An adult and three children were able to safely leave the home, located in the 100 block of Castlebrook Way N.E., at around 7 p.m.

Emergency crews arrived to find smoke pouring from the home’s open front door. Firefighters extinguished the blaze and used fans to remove smoke from the rest of the home.

Damage was contained to the basement bedroom where the fire originated but officials said other parts of the home suffered smoke damage.

No injuries were reported.

Investigators are working to determine what caused the fire.
