Pedestrian struck by vehicle in Alberta Avenue neighbourhood dies in hospital

A man in his 20s died in hospital after he was struck by a vehicle while walking in the Alberta Avenue neighbourhood Thursday morning.

Edmonton police were called to the area of 95 Street and 113 Avenue at around 7:15 a.m.

Officers said the man was walking in the middle of the road when he was struck by a vehicle heading north on 95 Street.

“At the time, the lighting conditions – it was dark… It appears that it might have been a factor with regards to the event here,” Const. Darren Sunley with the Edmonton Police Service said Thursday morning. “The pedestrian was wearing really dark clothing in the middle of the roadway.”

The pedestrian was taken to hospital with critical injuries where he later died.

Police said speed and alcohol do not appear to be factors in the collision, which is still under investigation.

This is Edmonton’s 22nd pedestrian fatality of 2016.
