COLUMBUS, Ohio – A central Ohio firefighter struck by lightning at a charity event two years ago has died from an infection attributed to his injuries.

The Columbus Division of Fire says 56-year-old Stu Tudor died Thursday.

Tudor was off-duty when he was struck in June 2014 at what’s now MAPFRE Stadium in Columbus. Tudor was attending a charity event there while serving with an organization that fundraises for emergency responders injured in the line of duty.

The Columbus Dispatch reports Tudor lost the use of his legs and had limited arm use. It says hundreds of Columbus firefighters filled in at work or donated vacation days so that Tudor could get 25 years of service and collect his pension.

His death comes less than two months after his official retirement.
