Protestors rally outside MP Kelly Block’s office after flyer sparks outrage

Hundreds gathered outside of Tory MP Kelly Block’s office yesterday to protest her recent community flyer.

Protesters gathered yesterday outside of the Saskatoon-Rosetown-Biggar Member of Parliament’s office.

Residents were up in arms about a flyer she mailed out to her constituency last week.

The flyer read, “Ending unfair benefits for refugee Claimants. New arrivals to Canada have received dental and vision care paid by your tax dollars. They’ve had free prescriptions. Not anymore.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“Like you’ve got to be kidding me, she actually said this? How offensive, I was really angry,” said protester Karen Swan.

On June 30th, the Harper Government cut health care for refugees. This includes access to vision, dental care, prescription drugs, mobility devices and emergency medial assistance.

“This is a population that for the most part has welcomed these people into the country,” said NDP leadership candidate Dr. Ryan Meili.

Block was not available for comment, but has previously defended her flyer saying she “was just highlighting the fact that we were ending benefits for pending and rejected refugee claimants that other Canadians do not receive.”
