New technology hoping to help reassure public about pipeline safety

The International Pipeline Conference is taking place in downtown Calgary and one of the key topics is finding ways to ensure pipelines are safe.

The show has brought delegates from 40 countries to Calgary to look at the challenges facing the industry.

The latest technology, including sonic 3D imaging and in-line inspection tools was showcased, as members looked to minimize the damaging effects from oil spills.

According to Chris Bloomer with the Canadian Energy Pipeline Association, transparency is key.

“We need to communicate on how we operate, how we’re performing and how we’re going to get better.”

Experts at the conference agreed oil spills affect more than just the environment. Every incident plays a role in public confidence in the industry as a whole.

“It’s the almost-daily concern of everybody in the industry,” Bob Sims from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers said. “And improving pipeline integrity is certainly critical to public acceptance.”
