Sask. minimum wage set to increase in December

The minimum wage in Saskatchewan will increase from $9.50 to $10 per hour on December 1, 2012.

Upon implimentation, the minimum call-out pay will also increase to $30.

“The contributions of Saskatchewan’s working population are essential to ongoing economic growth and prosperity in the province,” said Labour Relations and Workplace Safety Minister Don Morgan.

The increase is part of an overall review of labour relations and workplace safety legislation.

“We can do better to provide stability to workers and businesses, and to make working in Saskatchewan the most attractive option for Canadians,” said NDP labour critic David Forbes.

The Saskatchewan NDP has proposed an indexed minimum wage that would change annually like the change to the all-items Consumer Price Index (CPI).

Morgan said the government is still actively considering indexing minimum wage.

“Since taking office, our government has increased minimum wage from $7.95 to $10 an hour,” said Morgan.

Currently, Saskatchewan has the lowest minimum wage in Canada.
