Police are investigating a violent attack in Vernon.

The attacked happened early Wednesday morning when a man and two women in their twenties were leaving a nightclub just after 2:30 a.m.

Josh Wightman, Brianna Woodcock and Elka Crosson were walking down 33 Street near 39 Avenue when they saw a group of people ahead, around their age.

“Brianna said hello and went in for a high five,” said Wightman. He said a man in the group then pushed her away and called her derogatory names. “I said that’s not nice, and he said, ‘Do you want to go? You want to start something?'”

Wightman said he declined and the trio attempted to walk away when the situation escalated.

“He kicked me to the ground, then brought Brianna to the ground and kicked her face in. All I could do was yell ‘call 9-1-1!'” said Wightman.

He said a bystander heard the call for help and approached them. The attacker and the rest of his group ran away.

“It hurt me to see my friend in so much pain just for saying hello,” said Wightman.

Worried for his safety, Wightman said “I can’t go out anymore and I wont be.”

The attack happened just days after another violent assault in the same neighbourhood, where two brothers were stabbed while they were on their way to a local bar.

“Our kids aren’t safe,” said Wightman’s mother Judy. “Where are our police? Why weren’t they there?”

Both Wightman and Woodcock are now recovering from the attack. Crosson didn’t sustain any major injuries.

RCMP have not issued information about the alleged assault or if they are investigating.
