22 people displaced by fire in Woodstock, New Brunswick

Twenty-two people, including two children, have been displaced by a fire that gutted a building in the downtown of Woodstock, New Brunswick.

The fire, which was reported shortly after 9 a.m. Tuesday, also resulted in smoke and water damage to two adjacent buildings on the 600 block of Main Street.

Dan Bedell, communications director with the Red Cross, says the building had three upstairs apartments, plus a sporting goods store and a natural foods store on the ground level.

He says tenants were also evacuated from six apartments in the adjacent buildings, and the Red Cross is providing them with meals, hotels and clothing.

Bedell says local veterinarians offered to examine a number of pets that were rescued from the fire.

The Woodstock Fire Department received help from fire crews in a number of nearby communities including Houlton, Maine.
