One month after Braydon Heather was viciously assaulted in Beaumont, Alta., friends of the family say the 14-year-old doesn’t remember what happened.

“Braydon has no recollection of the attack and so far refuses to talk about it,” Melanie Aubé said.

“We are unsure whether this memory loss is short term, due to a stroke, or the result of the brain injury, or if it’s just his emotional self’s way of protecting him to concentrate on healing his body.”

Still, after regaining consciousness on July 6, Braydon continues to recover.

“Braydon is making incredible physical progress, considering the vicious attack he endured one month ago today,” Aubé said in a statement on Tuesday. “He is able to walk slowly, with very little assistance, he is eating a lot more soft foods with only minimal top ups from the feeding tube, and his energy is improving every day.”

“Today has been a fantastic day,” Braydon’s mother Amberleah wrote in a Facebook post Sunday. “It’s like watching your toddler do things they have never done before… Since 11 a.m., he has walked all over 4D floor, helped make a smoothie, gotten up out of bed.

Aubé set up a GoFundMe page with another close friend to help the family during Braydon’s recovery.

As of Tuesday morning, nearly $78,000 had been raised.

Braydon’s mom started an online petition, hoping to bring attention to Canada’s Youth Justice Act.

“My 14-year-old son Braydon Heather was viciously beaten, attacked and cut up,” she writes. “This is a petition to have kids that commit adult crimes receive adult jail time.”

Family friends say Braydon was cut across the face “like The Joker,” which damaged his transverse jugular vein and left ear. They say the cuts on his hands and arms required hundreds of stitches and his right elbow, left wrist and both sides of his jaw are broken.
