Big jump in lentil crops seeded in Saskatchewan for 2016

More lentils than ever before have been seeded in Saskatchewan, according to June’s preliminary principal field crop report released by Statistics Canada.

Farmers in Saskatchewan seeded 5.3 million acres of lentils, up 42.6 per cent from 2015. This accounts for 90 per cent of total acreage in the country.

Statistics Canada said it continues a four-year upward trend in lentil seeding.

There was also an increase in the amount of canola in the ground, with 10.9 million acres seeded in Saskatchewan, an increase of 2.1 per cent from the previous year.

The amount of wheat sown this year in the province dropped 7.1 per cent to 12.1 million acres, while nationally, barley fell 2.2 per cent to 6.4 million acres and oats was down 14.3 per cent to 2.9 million acres.

Alberta and Saskatchewan account for almost 90 per cent the barley totals while Alberta was the only province to report an increase in sown oats.

Overall, Statistics Canada reported seeding across the country was nearly complete in early June, well above the five-year average, with total crop land lying fallow in 2016 at an all-time low.
