An extra $150 million over the next two years will be put towards affordable housing in B.C., the federal government announced today.
Minister of Families, Children and Social Development Jean-Yves Duclos made the announcement in Vancouver today with Deputy Premier Rich Coleman. The funding is in addition to an annual $63 million provided by both governments towards affordable housing.
The new federal government funding includes $50.9 million for “increasing demand for repairs as social housing units age” and improving energy and water use, $25.2 million for the “construction, repair and adaption of affordable housing for seniors,” and $10.9 million for the “construction and renovation of shelters and transition houses for victims of family violence.”
The announcement came two days before a Ministers’ Forum on Housing in Victoria.
“The Province is partnering with the federal government to build and renovate more affordable and supportive housing for British Columbians,” said Coleman in a statement.
“We will be working with communities throughout the province to identify specific housing needs and determine where the additional funding will be distributed.”
