WINNIPEG — Cottages in the Whiteshell are cut off after a deluge of rain washed out local roads and highways.

Several roads around Falcon Lake were closed, including sections of South Shore Road and regional road 301 and some cottagers on the south side of Falcon Lake can only get in or out via boat.

Other cottagers and people staying at the Penguin Resort are trapped after the only road in or out was completely washed out on Saturday.

“We’re on an island. We won’t be getting out of here with vehicles any time soon,” said Barry Hewitt, who lives in one of the cottages.

To leave, people have to walk over a sunken dock, through ankle-deep water.

“Never. Not a chance. Never expected this at all,” said Ken Moulden, owner of the Penguin Resort.

All of the people staying there had to leave their cars behind and get picked up since there’s no way to cross the washed out road.

The water also caused major damage to a marina near Penguin Resort.

“We’ve basically washed away a big chunk of our property and flooded out our shop and spent all yesterday rescuing sunken and flipped and washed away boats,” said Ian Young, owner of Faloma Beach Marina.

To the north, near West Hawk Lake, more roads have been washed out prompting voluntary evacuations including Block 5 of Caddy Lake.

At around 2 p.m. highway 312 was closed down because of flooding. Highway 44 north of Caddy Lake Resort is also closed with water flowing over the road.

The province says they are waiting until the water recedes to fully assess the damage before beginning repairs on roads.
