WATCH ABOVE: New home construction numbers have jumped in Moncton, but the weather has stalled workers. As Shelley Steeves reports, new home contractors are rushing to make up for the lost time – Jun 21, 2016

Hammers are flying fast and furious at construction sites across Greater Moncton as builders try to make up for time lost due to rainy weather.

“I have been building for 25 years and this spring was one of the worst springs we have ever seen,” said contractor Léonce Cormier with Comfort Home Builders.

Cormier says his new home construction projects are behind by about three weeks and the wet weather in May and June is to blame.

“In just this one house for example, we started the foundation and we wasted probably about eight or nine working days trying to get it done,” he said, adding that it took another week for the weather to clear enough to start framing the home.

Cormier says while the delays have been a headache for him, it’s his workers who have lost the most.

“There’s a lot of people that waited to start working because they are seasonal workers. So they wasted a lot of days when they really wanted to work but just couldn’t because of the weather,” he said.

Now he says they’re having to work weekends to try and get caught up.

According to the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation, the new home construction market in Moncton is showing signs of a rebound.

“There is a few reasons, but mostly I would say that it is economic. It’s good job numbers in places like Moncton that have brought people to the region,” said CMHC analyst Michael Edwards.

In May 2016 there were more than double the number of new home starts ups in Moncton compared to the same time in 2015.
