On July 1, 2016, Canada will turn 149 years old. There are a number of ways to celebrate Canada Day in Edmonton. Here’s a list of events to help narrow down the options:

Downtown fireworks

The downtown fireworks display will go off at 11 p.m. There are several great places to catch the spectacle, including:

  • Alberta Legislature grounds
  • Victoria Park
  • Ezio Faraone Park
  • Government House Park
  • Edmonton ballpark (Formerly Telus Field)

There is no viewing from Kinsmen Park. Road closures and traffic delays will be in effect. Visit the City of Edmonton’s website for details.

Mill Woods Park events and fireworks

If you prefer to hang out on the south side of Edmonton, Mill Woods Park hosts a full day of activities, which end with a bang. Hay rides, a petting zoo and carnival games run from 1 p.m. to 11 p.m. The fireworks display starts at 11 p.m.

Alberta Legislature

The Alberta Legislature will have a full day of family-friendly entertainment, from arts and crafts to live musical performances. Activities will be held from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., with the legislature building open between 12:30 p.m. and 5 p.m.

City Hall

Canada Day celebrations kick off at City Hall at noon. Free activities include kids’ crafts, live music and a photo booth, which run until 4 p.m.

Edmonton Valley Zoo

The Edmonton Valley Zoo will begin its festivities at 11 a.m.

Canada Day also coincides with Lucy the elephant’s 41st birthday and the zoo’s 57th birthday. Activities include live music and a scavenger hunt. Regular admission applies.

Muttart Conservatory

Treats, crafts and face painting await those who celebrate Canada Day at the Muttart Conservatory. The facility is open from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Regular admission applies.

Fort Edmonton Park

Celebrate Dominion Day the traditional way at Fort Edmonton Park with an authentic parade, toast the Queen and other royal activities. The park is open between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. Tickets can be pre-purchased online or at the gate.

Take in a ball game

The Edmonton ballpark (formerly Telus Field) will be the place to be for baseball fans this Canada Day. With the Fort McMurray Giants playing in town, ball fans are in for a double-header. The Giants will face Melville at 2 p.m. The Edmonton Prospects face Regina at 7 p.m.

Hit the pool

What better way to cool off on a hot summer day than to hit one of the city’s outdoor pools or spray parks. Regular admission rates apply.

The Works Art & Design Festival

Located at City Hall, the Works Art & Design Festival attracts artists from around the world. The festival is a free event that showcases over 200 exhibits. This year, a street stage will be set up to offer live music each day from noon to 9:30 p.m.

Chinatown night market

From cultural performances to food trucks, celebrate Canada Day in front of Wong’s Benevolent Association with a night market between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m.

Art Gallery of Alberta

The Art Gallery of Alberta will offer free admission on Canada Day. The gallery is open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., with the last admission at 4:30 p.m.

Strathcona County

Broadmoor Lake Park will be turned into a big birthday bash with a pancake breakfast, roving entertainment and a bubble zone. The festivities start at 9 a.m. The fireworks start at 11 p.m.

Leduc County

From a barbecue and beer gardens to a Canada Day parade and family carnival, there is no shortage of activity in Leduc. The parade starts at noon. An outdoor concert, featuring Big Wreck, runs from 5 p.m. until 10:45 p.m. The evening will wrap up with fireworks at 11 p.m.

Stony Plain

Celebrate Canada Day in Stony Plain with a citizenship ceremony, art walk and of course, birthday cake. The events start at 10 a.m. at Heritage Park.

Spruce Grove

Jubilee Park will be the place to be in Spruce Grove this July 1. The day starts with a pancake breakfast. There’s also a craft tent, circus workshop and balloon twisting.

The Boom Chucka Boys headline a free concert and fireworks will cap off the day.

St. Albert

Live entertainment, games and food vendors will be in Rotary Park and Riel Recreation Park to celebrate Canada Day in St. Albert. A free outdoor concert will take place at City Hall, followed by fireworks at 11 p.m. at Seven Hills. The event is accepting donations for the Food Bank.

Fort Saskatchewan

With a petting zoo, show and shine and parade, there are several ways to celebrate the nation’s birthday in Fort Saskatchewan. The evening will finish off with fireworks at the top of the Rotary Amphitheatre in the North Saskatchewan River Valley.

Elk Island National Park

On Canada Day, entry into all of Canada’s National Parks, National Historic Sites and National Marine Conservation Areas is free. Elk Island National Park will have festivities from noon until 4 p.m.

South Pointe

The South Pointe Community is hosting Canada Day events from 5 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. From food trucks to live music, there’s a little something for everyone.
