A major donation from Bloom to the neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) will help some of the Saskatoon Health Region’s tiniest and most critically ill patients.

On Monday morning, staff at the NICU at Royal University Hospital expressed their thanks to the Bloom organization for it’s donation of $51,000.

This marks Bloom’s largest donation to the unit and over five years, the committee has raised over $140,000 to help support patients and their families.

Every year, more than 600 babies born in the region require a stay at the NICU.

For some babies that stay may be just a few days, while other infants need to be cared for up to three months before being discharged.

“We owe them our lives,” said Tina Searcy, who is a Bloom committee member.

“Our babies are here today because of them so we want to give back and keep giving back every year as much as we can,” added Bloom founder Amy Novakovski.

In December, the number of NICU beds increased from 32 to 38 but the 180 staff members often care for up to 41 babies at any given time.
