Canadian death toll in Ecuador earthquake rises to 4

The number of Canadians killed in Saturday’s devastating 7.8-magnitude earthquake has risen to four, the government announced Tuesday.

International Development Minister Marie-Claude Bibeau confirmed Tuesday that two more Canadians are among the more than 430 people killed in the strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador in decades.

Global Affairs Canada says consular officials are providing assistance to the families of four Canadian citizens killed during the earthquake. Officials would not provide any further information or identify those killed, citing privacy reasons.

On Sunday, a mother and her 12-year-old son from Quebec were identified among the dead.

Television station TVA identified those victims as Jennifer Mawn and her son, Arthur Laflamme. The father, Pascal Laflamme and the couple’s daughter were slightly injured, TVA reported.

Foreign Minister Stéphane Dion expressed his condolences Sunday and told other Canadians in the South American country that the Canadian Embassy would provide assistance to those affected.
