KELOWNA, B.C. — A more than century old temperature record is forecast to be not only broken, but smashed today.
Back in 1900, it warmed up to 22.2 degrees, a record that has stood for 116 years. Today, the temperature is expected to reach 27 degrees.
This is just the beginning of the heat wave according to Environment Canada meteorologist Lisa Coldwells.
“We are looking at three days of record breaking heat in the Okanagan Valley.”
Coldwells says Tuesday and Wednesday are also forecast to break records.
Tuesday will be the warmest day, heating up to 29 degrees. The current record of 23.8 degress was set back in 1994.
Wednesday is forecast to reach 28, about a degree-and-a-half warmer than the record set back in 1942 of 26.7.
“Cloud creeps in Thursday,” said Coldwells. “It will still be 24 degrees. It isn’t record-breaking, but normal daytime highs should be 16 degrees, still eight degrees above normal.”
The temperature is expected to drop back to normal by Sunday.
