MIDLAND, Ont. – A Canadian freestyle skier who died in a training run in January has been honoured by her childhood friends and neighbours.
A street in Midland, Ont., where Burke grew up has been re-named Sarah Burke Way.
The new street sign was unveiled Thursday evening in a ceremony attended by Burke’s family, friends and neighbours who remember Burke as a child.
Burke died in a training run in Utah in January at the age of 29.
She was considered a pioneer in freestyle skiing and led a successful charge to have the super pipe event added to the Olympic menu for the 2014 Winter Games in Russia.
Her father, Gord Burke, says he is proud and honoured by the move to rename the street, which was organized at first by neighbours without his knowledge.
Midland mayor Gord McKay says Sarah Burke Way will be a lasting tribute to a woman who brought so much pride to the town.
