Winnipeg Wild open Regionals with a win

The Winnipeg Wild got off to a strong start at the Telus Cup West Regional tournament in Saskatoon. The Wild defeated the Saskatchewan champion Notre Dame Hounds 3-1 on Thursday.

Ian Briscoe had a goal and an assist for the Wild in the victory. Brett Namaka and Rylan Bettens had the other markers for Winnipeg.

The Wild were outshot 36-20 as Mitchel Adamyk made 35 saves in the win and was rewarded with the Wild’s player of the game award.

The Wild have won the Manitoba title in four of the last five years but have failed to advance past regionals in all of their six previous appearances.

Winnipeg’s next game is on Friday against the Kenora Thistles. The winner of the tournament will advance to the national Telus Cup April 18 to 24 in Quispamsis, New Brunswick.
