Charges could soon be laid against whoever is responsible for cutting down a number of trees in Britannia.
Last month, at least 19 mature trees on public land were chopped down-much to the shock and dismay of others in the upscle area.
The head of bylaw services said he suspects the motive was to improve the view of downtown Calgary for nearby homes.
“At this point we’ll be going to a court hearing, so we’ll be asking the judge for higher than what would be the standard specified pentalty, so it would be several thousand dollars,” said Bill Bruce. “I think we have enough evidence.”
The city has put together a file and a prosecutor is reviewing it before proceeding with charges. They’re also waiting to learn the value of the trees and how much damage has been caused.
