MONTREAL – The company behind the proposed Energy East pipeline has signed a deal with a power equipment manufacturer and said the decision will create up to 120 jobs in Quebec.
TransCanada (TSX:TRP) said ABB Canada will make at least 22 electrical houses – or e-houses – at a new production facility in the Montreal region.
The multimillion-dollar e-houses are prefabricated structures that contain electrical and automation equipment for powering pump stations along the pipeline.
The e-houses have been custom-designed to meet TransCanada’s needs and to withstand extreme cold and snow.
The agreement with ABB Canada – a division of ABB Group in Switzerland – is expected to create another 90 spin-off jobs outside of the Montreal area.
The $15.7 billion cross-Canada pipeline proposal has been controversial in Quebec, with 82 Montreal-area mayors saying the pipeline’s environmental risks would outweigh its economic benefits.
Energy East would carry more than a million barrels a day of western crude as far east as Saint John, N.B., supplying oil to domestic refineries and international customers.
“This agreement demonstrates our ongoing commitment to hire local suppliers to safely build this piece of national energy infrastructure and support job creation in Quebec,” said Energy East president John Soini.
