LAKE COUNTRY — An early morning barn fire in Lake Country took the life of a pony and jeopardized the lives of several other animals, according to the Lake Country fire department.
Assistant Fire Chief Brent Penner says the fire department received a report of a fully involved barn on fire shortly after 5 a.m. on Monday.
“The homeowner did a good job releasing a couple of horses upon arrival but one pony was not able to escape,” says Penner.
Penner says it was a large blaze which engulfed the barn but fire crews arrived before any other animals died.
“Firefighters were able to knock it down and release some of the other barn animals,” he says.

There were four horses in the barn, three of them made it out safely. Other animals that were inside but managed to make it out okay were chickens and ducks.
Penner says the fire department received several calls about the fire which caused a big glow in the sky.
The barn was destroyed by the flames; the owners do have insurance. The suspected cause of the blaze is electrical; Penner says there is nothing suspicious about the fire.
“There was some electrical in there, heaters for chickens and things like that,” says Penner.
The investigation into the incident is ongoing.
