WINNIPEG — Homeowners in Winnipeg School Division could see their school taxes jump 5.1 per cent.

That amounts to another $64 on the average $203,900 home.

The WSD finance committee is meeting Monday night to review a draft budget for the 2016-2017 school year.

On the table is a possible tax hike, but the division says 5.1 per cent is  just a ‘starting point’ as it reviews where it needs to spend more or less in the coming year. It’s possible a tax hike could be less than 5.1 per cent.

WSD says expenses rose at least 2 per cent in the past year but funding from the province only increase 1 per cent.

It’s not the only school division looking at an increase.

A first draft for the budget with the Seven Oaks School Division calls for a 5.37 % increase, which in that division, is another $45.09 on the average home.

In an email, board of trustees chairperson Claudia Sarbit wrote that provincial funding has not adequately addressed their small commercial tax base and increased enrollment costs.
