After having footage aired on news networks around the world and photos published in National Geographic magazines as well as national newspapers, former Global Saskatoon videographer Neil Fisher found his niche in Saskatchewan and has now been chosen as the 2016 Saskatchewanderer.

“It’s kind of like one of those once in a lifetime opportunities,” Fisher told Global News today in Regina after the announcement was made Friday morning.

Fisher grew up in Coquitlam, B.C. and after working for years as a marine mammal trainer and videographer at the Vancouver Aquarium and completing numerous photography excursions from the high arctic to Australia, he moved to Saskatchewan and started working as a videographer at Global Saskatoon.

Spending his weekends exploring the province helped Fisher realize that becoming the next Saskatchewanderer would be a natural fit for the budding outdoorsman who had become quite active documenting the province on social media.

“He has an important role to play, promoting the province’s wealth of attractions and events, as well as the jobs and entrepreneurial opportunities in tourism,” said Jeremy Harrison, the minister responsible for Tourism Saskatchewan.

Fisher hopes to see the Cypress Hills, go canoeing and see Grey Owl’s Cabin in Prince Albert during his year-long stint in the role.

“Neil has a unique background of work and travel,” said Parks, Culture and Sport Minister Mark Docherty.

“We look forward to seeing his photography and videography talents highlight the many amazing people and places of Saskatchewan. The Saskatchewanderer program offers us an opportunity to showcase our diverse province to a large audience.”

The United Nations has declared this the Year of the Pulse and Fisher says he’d like to explore the pulse crops that Saskatchewan produces as well.

“I really feel like the rest of Canada needs to open its eyes and see what Saskatchewan has to offer.”
