EDMONTON – It is perched on a peak in Parkland County overlooking the North Saskatchewan River. Owning this view will cost you $7.5 million.
This 13,000-square-foot home – one of the most expensive currently listed in the Edmonton area – was built at the base of 215 Street.
It’s not just a residence; it’s a labour of love. The home’s current owner built it with his own two hands.
“I chose an Old World Mediterranean style,” said Donald McCargar, who’s lived at the estate for 10 years.
The property boasts eight bedrooms, six bathrooms, a six-car garage, 25-foot ceilings and an 80-foot covered tunnel. There are statues, mouldings, gold door knockers, artwork on the ceilings and custom glass work.
“There’s no other residential other than these five lots,” McCargar said. “They’ve created these fives lots within a park.”
“These are the things that make this place special.”
McCargar designed the estate to be energy efficient. He said it costs him about $180 a month to heat the home, through a combination of hot water pipes in the floors and ventilation.
Despite all he’s put into the home, McCargar tries to keep emotions out of it as much as possible.
“You have to just come to a point where you can deceive yourself that you’re not going to be attached to it, but you are,” he said with a smile.
But he is single and feels he isn’t making the most of the property. He wants to see it used by a large family.
“I want people to enjoy this,” McCargar said.
“If it’s put into the right hands, I think I can walk away from it knowing that people will still care for it and love what I did here.”
