Snowfall warning for Canmore and K-country dropped

CALGARY – A snowfall warning for Kananaskis and Canmore was dropped Monday afternoon-but that does not mean the snow is over just yet.

Environment Canada first issued the snowfall warning Sunday night and it continued until just after 1 p.m. Monday. Calgarians also woke up to a blanket of snow Monday, but a warning was never issued for the city.

Avalanche conditions for backcountry users have been stable and low risk at and above tree-line in recent weeks in K-country.

Environment Canada said they expect this system to bring total amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres of snow in the foothills.

In Calgary, the flakes started to fly in the foothills overnight and also across much of central and southern Alberta. The city first started to see snow in the north end around 3 a.m. and has seen about five centimetres as of 12 p.m. Global weather anchor Gemma Stroobant said more flurries are expected Monday night and into Tuesday morning, but snow should clear out by Tuesday afternoon.

The moisture is affecting the road conditions in and around the city of Calgary. Calgary police are reporting 31 accidents as of noon on Monday, 4 of them involved injuries.

Alberta 511 is describing snow-covered and icy roads in all directions in and out of the city, but roads east of Strathmore appear to remain bare or dry.
