Toronto Zoo, dog parks draw Boxing Day visitors avoiding busy malls

TORONTO — Milder-than-usual weather is providing some alternative options for those who want to steer clear of the lineups at malls this Boxing Day.

“This warm weather, it’s fantastic. There’s lots to see throughout the whole site,” said William Rapley, executive director of conservation, education and wildlife at the Toronto Zoo.

The four white lion cubs in particular are getting plenty of visitors. They’re the first litter of their kind ever born in Canada and made their debut last week.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

“It’s very hectic and there’s a lot of peace here at the zoo,” said Christian, a young father from Toronto who brought his daughter down to see the pandas.

“It’s a different atmosphere altogether,” he said.

Dog parks were also bustling with canines and their owners looking for an alternative to the typical shopping mall experience.

“I hate crowds. And the deals, they aren’t that great on Boxing Day,” said dog owner Mira.

Other attractions that were open today include the Ontario Science Centre and Ripleys Aquarium.

Even so, many people still choose to spend the day after Christmas braving the lines and checkouts. According to one industry survey, 52 per cent of Canadians polled believe that Boxing Day is the best day to take advantage of bargains during the holiday season.

Electronics are the most popular items. Pragneash Patel was first in line outside the Best Buy at Scarborough Town Centre. He was there since 11 p.m. on Christmas Day.

“It’s just fun, you know. There are more than 400 people in line. If I come late, everything will be gone,” he said.
