WATCH: Woman’s Christmas laser light stolen from front yard, thief caught on surveillance video

WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg woman is hoping surveillance video will help to catch the Christmas Grinch who stole her laser light projector from her front yard.

Darlene Geiger was awoken by a noise in her front yard early Monday morning but didn’t think much of it until she went to take her dogs out just after 1 a.m.

“I noticed the spots from the lights weren’t shining and that’s when I knew,” said Geiger.

When she went outside she noticed her new Christmas light projector had been stolen.

Geiger called her daughter who came over to help scan through the surveillance video footage from the camera outside her home.

Geiger says a cab slowly drove by the house prior to the theft.

The video continues for a number of minutes where you can see the man checking around the yard, looking at the zip ties that held the light secure, before leaving and getting back into the car.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

A few minutes later, the cab drives by again and stops just out of frame of the video. The same man appears to walk back into the yard and crouches down around the light.

Geiger said it’s at that moment, the alleged thief uses a lighter to melt the zip ties before slowly walking away with her light.

Winnipeg police said Geiger and her family did everything right in trying to make sure their decorations were as secure as possible.

“It’s something new, a new trend, these projector lights,” said Constable Jason Michalyshen. “Surveillance video definitely helps us when we investigate cases like this.”

Officers said securing decorations with zip ties or using water to freeze certain decorations in place are good ways to deter thieves.

“Anything people can do to make it more difficult to steal will deter thieves,” said Michalyshen. “Thieves don’t want to spend the extra time trying to get access to things, they would rather be in and out quickly.
