Uber to test new carpooling service uberHOP for free in Toronto this week

TORONTO – Uber is expanding its already popular ride-sharing service in Toronto by offering users a new carpooling option called uberHOP for free this week.

Beginning on Tuesday, commuters will be given the option to share trips on pre-selected routes.

“Toronto is one of the first cities to enjoy uberHOP. It’ll be piloted for a few weeks so try it while you can!,” said Uber in a media release.

The company says it plans to charge a $5 flat fare along fixed routes after the free trial is over.

According to Uber, vehicles such as vans and SUVs can carry up to five passengers and the selected routes are point to point with only one drop-off.

The issue of Uber expanding its service as it deals with opposition from the city’s taxi industry was raised by reporters following a meeting between Ontario Premier Wynne and Mayor John Tory on Monday.

“This is technology that exists. It’s a reality. Our responsibility is to make sure that we keep up, in terms of keeping people safe, and have the regulation in place that needs to be in place,” said Wynne.

Tory reiterated his support for the taxi industry but stated having new options for commuters is a good thing.

“We have to keep it safe, but give them choice,” he said. “We have to make sure the law conforms to the technology.”

The uberHOP service operates weekdays only from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Four morning pick-up locations have been chosen during the pilot project phase and they include CityPlace, Distillery District, Fort York and Liberty Village — all of them destined for the Financial District.

Uber says it will add new carpooling routes based on demand.
