Both of the cubs are male and roughly one-year-old. They were found orphaned near Churchill, Manitoba and were transported to the Assiniboine Park Zoo late October.

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

After a month of being in quarantine, zoo officials have released them into their new home at the Leatherdale International Polar Bear Conservation Centre. Monday was your first chance to see the new cubs and they will be available to the public daily from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

The zoo is planning a ‘donate to vote’ campaign for the cubs in hopes of raising funds for the Polar Bear Rescue team. The campaign will kick off on Tuesday with anyone donating to the team being able to vote.  You can donate at the Assiniboine Park Zoo website here.

The four options for cub names are York, Tatnam, Eli and Aiken. These four names were selected for their significance to the York Factory First Nations whose lands house crucial polar bear dens in Manitoba.

The cubs’ mother was killed when she was hit by a cracker shell. A resident was trying to scare her and her cubs away from a building. Experts said cubs at their age do not have a chance of survival if left on their own in the wild.
